Hiding a Kansas K-TAG in an Oklahoma PikePass
J.R. Hehnly | May 5, 2009This was to allow me to use both the Oklahoma PikePass system and the Kansas KTAG system without covering my windshield with multiple transmitters.
I basically just stuck the KTAG to the inside of the OU PikePass holder that I purchased from the PikePass store (the side that faces the windshield).
Since the holder is attached to the windshield with velcro I get the added benefit of being able to transfer the K-TAG to another vehicle, something you cannot do if it’s stuck to the glass.
The systems do not seem to interfere with each other, both work correctly when needed.

What's the point in this?

That's really clever. Have you had any read errors/violations
Roadgeek | May 23, 2009That’s really clever. Have you had any read errors/violations at toll plazas due to both transponders being present and the wrong one being detected?
Just curious, were you able to have both transponders read
Rush Wickes | June 3, 2009Just curious, were you able to have both transponders read at their respective facilities after pairing them together this way? I thought the K-Tag sticker had to be permanently affixed to the interior windshield glass to work? Your project seems to suggest this is not the case.
Yes, they both work fine.
J.R. Hehnly | June 4, 2009Yes, they both work fine.
Neither one has ever given any problems, even the PikePass
J.R. Hehnly | June 4, 2009Neither one has ever given any problems, even the PikePass lanes that you go through at 70 mph.
This just lets me save windshield space and still have
J.R. Hehnly | June 4, 2009This just lets me save windshield space and still have both systems working at the same time.
That's useful for me to know, because I have a
Rush Wickes | June 6, 2009That’s useful for me to know, because I have a Florida Sunpass (the old battery pack kind, very similar to the Pikepass) and use it in rental cars when in Florida. It has proven to be hit or miss with being read in toll lanes, much to my chagrin.
Recently, Florida started shifting towards using the sticker transponder, the SunPass mini, similar to your K-TAG. That’s not useful for rental car situations. Your concept here seems to show that the K-TAG *will* read even if not affixed to the glass permanently. I’ll have to give it some thought, maybe I’ll work on something with the Sunpass mini for a similar result. Thanks!
Just wanted to make sure before I did something like
Hans G | December 11, 2009Just wanted to make sure before I did something like this, you haven’t experienced any problem in the months following these posts, have you?
I've had no problems with either toll system with this
J.R. Hehnly | December 12, 2009I’ve had no problems with either toll system with this setup. It’s nice to be able to use the KTAG in different vehicles, something that can’t be done if it’s stuck to a windshield.
I put the k-tag on my shirt until it was
Dallas Fulton | March 9, 2010I put the k-tag on my shirt until it was not stickey anymore. As I pass thru the toll I just hold it to the windshield. This has worked for 6 months, until now. On my way from Topeka to KC this morning it didn’t work either time. Do you think if I glued it to a piece of plexiglass and held it up near the windshield while passing thru would work??
I don't see why it wouldn't work that way. As
J.R. Hehnly | March 10, 2010I don’t see why it wouldn’t work that way. As long as it is up in the window when passing the sensor it shouldn’t matter.
Wouldn't it make sense to have a universal turnpike pass
Dave | March 16, 2013Wouldn’t it make sense to have a universal turnpike pass that would work in multiple jurisdictions? I like your ingenuity and recognize that this is a pain when traveling between Kansas and Oklahoma and beyond. You would think that the state’s would be able to figure this out.
